What is RFID?

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an advanced identification technology that uses electromagnetic fields to automatically detect and track tags attached to objects. These tags store electronic data that can be read from a distance, eliminating the need for manual scanning or direct line-of-sight alignment.

Based on Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) technology, RFID enables fast, accurate, and contactless information retrieval, making it ideal for asset tracking, inventory management, logistics, and access control applications.

Types of RFID Tags

  • Active RFID Tags: Battery-powered tags that offer extended read ranges and are ideal for tracking high-value assets.
  • Passive RFID Tags: Powered by the RFID reader, providing a cost-effective solution for short- to medium-range identification.
  • Read-Only & Read/Write Tags: Available in fixed-data or programmable formats to suit different operational requirements.

Applications of RFID Tags

Retail & Inventory Management

RFID technology streamlines retail operations by enabling real-time inventory visibility, improving stock accuracy, and enhancing overall store efficiency. It helps businesses automate tracking, reduce losses, and optimize inventory management.

  • Real-Time Inventory Tracking: Tag merchandise for accurate monitoring and instant stock visibility.
  • Theft Prevention: Reduce shrinkage by triggering security alerts when tagged items pass through exit points without authorization.
  • Improved Stock Accuracy: Simplify inventory audits and ensure timely stock replenishment with automated tracking.

Access Control Systems

RFID-based Access Control Systems provide secure, fast, and contactless authentication for authorized personnel. They simplify access management while enhancing security across commercial, residential, and industrial facilities.

  • Seamless Authentication: Replace traditional magnetic strip cards with RFID cards for quick and reliable access.
  • Secure Entry Management: Control access to restricted areas with a simple RFID card scan.
  • Secure Data Storage: Store large volumes of user credentials safely for efficient identity verification.

Logistics & Transportation

RFID technology enhances logistics and transportation operations by enabling automated vehicle identification, real-time tracking, and efficient fleet management. It helps reduce manual processes while improving operational accuracy and visibility across the supply chain.

  • Vehicle Identification & Gate Automation: Mount RFID tags on vehicles for automated gate access, toll collection, and secure entry management.
  • Automated Tracking: Eliminate manual log entries with fast and accurate RFID-based vehicle and cargo tracking.
  • Real-Time Fleet Management: Monitor vehicles and cargo with live data updates to improve operational efficiency and supply chain visibility.

Industrial Asset Tracking

RFID technology enables efficient tracking and management of industrial assets, providing real-time visibility into the location and status of tools, machinery, and equipment. It helps organizations improve productivity, accountability, and asset utilization across large facilities.

  • Asset Location Tracking: Monitor the movement and location of tools, machinery, and equipment in real time.
  • Improved Operational Visibility: Enhance workflow efficiency with accurate asset tracking and greater accountability.
  • Loss Prevention: Reduce the risk of misplaced or stolen assets across factories, warehouses, and construction sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an RFID system work? expand_more
An RFID system consists of a tag, which is made up of a microchip with an antenna, and an interrogator or reader with an antenna. The reader sends out electromagnetic waves. The tag antenna is tuned to receive these waves. A passive RFID tag draws power from field created by the reader and uses it to power the microchip’s circuits. The chip then modulates the waves that the tag sends back to the reader and the reader converts the new waves into digital data.
How much information can the tag store? expand_more
It is used basically to store only basic information about article. RFID is made to store upto 2 KB of data.
Why is RFID better than using barcodes? expand_more
Both works on different technologies. They are not comparable to each other. Barcode is detected by the scanner to read the article. RFID is read by the reader.
Are there any standards for RFID? expand_more
Yes. International standards have been adopted for some very specific applications, such as tracking animals. Many other standards initiatives are underway. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is working on standards for tracking goods in the supply chain using high-frequency tags (ISO 18000-3) and ultra-high frequency tags (ISO 18000-6).
What’s the difference between passive and active tags? expand_more
Active RFID tags have a battery, which is used to run the microchip’s circuitry and to broadcast a signal to a reader. Passive tags have no battery. Instead, they draw power from the reader, which sends out electromagnetic waves that induce a current in the tag’s antenna.
What is the read range for a typical RFID tag? expand_more
The reading range depends upon many factors. The model of RFID, location and purpose is taken into consideration for the range. Plush technologies provide RFID of different ranges to make choices according to the business use.
